Lambswool

100% Merino lambswool wool is a beautifully natural material, widely used across the world but for Cloth & Cut only in Scotland!

In order to obtain a soft wool, short and very fine, lambswool refers directly to wool that comes from the lamb for the first time in its life which is 50 mm or shorter, from the first shearing of the lamb at age of six or seven months. Geelong Merino Lambswool is comparable to cashmere for its warmth and luxuriously soft handle.

The wool is supple and tough which makes it possible to manufacture products both delicate and warm. It has both antibacterial and hypoallergenic qualities which is perfect for those of us with sensitive skin. Lambswool is also a natural heat regulator, keeping you warm during the winter and cool in the summer. It is also fire-retardant which means when it is exposed to fire it will not melt like other similar synthetic materials.

Merino Lambswool is water resistant too and can absorb up to 20% of its weigh in water before it starts to soak through. This hydroscopic quality also has the ability to absorb or wick moisture away from the body and dues to its unique structure and can help reduce odours whilst keeping you warm and dry. Each layer of merino lambswool works to transport sweat away from the skin to the outside of your clothing whilst it’s still vapour — helping you to keep you warm and dry. These properties come about through Lanolin which is the naturally occurring wax or grease that is present in all sheep's wool. It has important natural antibacterial properties, useful for preventing body odours too.. Merino lambswool clothing has been in use with these properties in clothing which have been worn to conquer Everest, within the Tweed clothing and ‘jumpers’ Sir Edmund Hilary wore in 1953.

Despite merino lambswool requiring a little more care when cleaning (Hand wash please), dirt sits on the surface of the merino lambswool fibre, making it easier to clean and if cared for will last a lifetime of use.

Caring for our environment through use of sustainable sources is something we are all increasingly aware about and therefore it’s hard to beat lambswool. Each year sheep are sheared and their fleece always grow back. Although this fleece will never be as soft as the first sheer, it can still create products with all of the other the benefits of lambswool we have listed here. When or if a lambswool product does finally reach the end of it’s cycle, it fully degrades whilst adding nutrients back into the soil unlike many of the synthetic alternatives such as polyester or acrylic which are being proven to pollute our oceans and wildlife where it is finding it’s way into our food chain through fish.
